Roma line up shock Mourinho replacement?

Italian club AS Roma have reportedly identified a replacement after parting ways with Jose Mourinho, with the two parties said to already be in talks.

Giallorossi announced on Tuesday that Jose Mourinho and his coaching staff have departed the side with immediate effect following a campaign blemished by a series of underwhelming results.

After being appointed in May 2021, the Portuguese tactician led the team to a UEFA Europa League triumph just a year later. He then took them to another final in Budapest last season but fell short, losing to Sevilla on penalties.

This campaign, however, things have not exactly gone to plan. After 20 Serie A matches, Roma picked up just eight victories, and amassing just 29 points with Mourinho at the helm.

Following the owner's reported decision to relieve the former Real Madrid manager of his duties after the club's 3-1 defeat to Italian rivals AC Milan over the weekend, a replacement is said to have already been identified.

According to journalist Fabrizio Romano, former Giallorossi midfielder and captain Daniele De Rossi is favourite to take over the vacant managerial role. He is said to be keen on returning to the club at which he spent 18 years and that contact has already been made.

Thus far, the 40-year-old has managed to accumulate some coaching experience following his retirement from professional football in 2020.

He was a technical coach for Italy's national team from January to October 2022, before taking on the task of managing Serie B side SPAL until February last year.
