Dube Birds announce new era as Moroka Swallows name returns

Soweto giants Swallows have announced a new era with the return of their Moroka Swallows name ahead of the upcoming campaign for the iconic Dube Birds.

The move is a nod to the club's traditional name at a time when Moroka Swallows were one of the most revered and recognisable football clubs in South Africa, up until their relegation to the National First Division in 2014/2015 season and as down as the SAB League by 2017.

Businessman David Mogashoa had renamed the club Swallows after purchasing the status of NFD side Maccabi FC in 2019 and the 'new Swallows' successfully gained automatic promotion back to to the top-flight in 2020.

The recent name change also comes as part of the club's bid to retain it's status as one of the Soweto Giants, under the tag line 'Rebirth' and  'Make Moroka Swallows great again'.

The changes have not been limited to just the name, the Dube Birds will be guided by former Mamelodi Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs coach Steve Komphela, who was unveiled as new head coach at the start of July.

The 56-year-old will be looking to help Swallows challenge for a top-four spot after caretaker Musa Nyatama secured a top eight finish for the Birds last season.

Former Maritzburg United attacker Ali Meza has been signed to beef up the frontline, alongside Tshegofatso Mabasa, who will be joining on loan from Orlando Pirates.

Keenan Phillips has joined from SuperSport United and Lentshene Phalane has been signed from Royal AM. other signing included Falakhe Tshanini  and  Victor Bakah from Uthongathi.

Komphela is expected to begin his reign with a testing MTN8 quarter-final clash against former team Sundowns in August.
