Los Blancos needed extra time to overcome their city rivals 4-1 in the Lisbon final, handing the Galacticos their long-awaited tenth European Cup – ‘La Decima’ - which their Spanish shot-stopper ranked as his all-time favourite victory, ahead of his country’s maiden Mundial triumph in South Africa 2010.
"This is extra special," the Madrid skipper told Canal Plus. “It's just as important as the World Cup, if not a little more so.
“It's been so long coming and 10 is a round number, a perfect number.”
Casillas then praised the fans for their support and their good behaviour in the stands during the entertaining Final.
“I'd like to congratulate everyone who came to watch the match and thank both sets of fans for their faultless behaviour,” he said.
Having come back from 1-0 down, Casillas felt his side was deserving of the victory as their relentless pressure paid off.
"It was very hard fought,” he said. “They got a lucky goal because of a mistake on our part, but they hardly threatened apart from that.”
Casillas dedicated the victory to Madrid fans across the globe, and is already looking ahead to next season.
“This Tenth belongs to every Madrid fan around the world, so I hope you enjoy it,” he said.
“After today it's time to think about the Eleventh."
