Wydad Casablanca suffered a 2-0 defeat to Premier League champions Manchester City in their FIFA Club World Cup opener.
City gave debuts to new signings Rayan Cherki and Tijani Reijnders, while South African duo Thembinkosi Lorch and Cassius Mailula lined-up for the Moroccan giants.
Foden broke the deadlock in the opening two minutes when he pounced on a loose ball in the box following a spill by goalkeeper El Mehdi Benabid and powered into the bottom-corner.
Egyptian marksman Omar Marmoush nearly doubled the advantage in the opening-quarter through a clever effort from the attacking-third, but he went narrowly wide.
Lorch almost levelled moments later through an audacious long-range effort from the halfway line after spotting Ederson off the line, but the Brazilian goalkeeper was able to get back and make the save.
The Mamelodi Sundowns loanee continued to provide problems and pulled underneath a long-ball to cut-in of Nathan Ake and tee-up Mailula, but Ederson made himself big in goal.
City, though, were rather unfazed therefore doubled their lead when Jeremy Doku made space for himself in the area and tucked in the near post after meeting a corner-kick.
Mailula didn’t come out for the second half and was replaced by Mohamed Rayhi, whilst the Cityzens remained unchanged from the first stanza.
Norwegian ace Erling Haaland, summoned off the bench, nearly bagged a third goal and opened his account in the tournament, but he dragged well over after carving out some space in the box.
Wydad gave a debut to new signing Stephane Aziz Ki in the final seven minutes and sacrificed the hard-running Lorch.
The Cityzens were reduced to ten men two minutes from time when Rico Lewis got a straight red-card following a lunging challenge.
The red card didn’t unsettle the English giants, who emerged victorious regardless and jumped to the top of Group G.
