Werner: My biggest problem at Chelsea was Lukaku

Former Chelsea star Timo Werner has revealed why Romelu Lukaku was one of his biggest problems during his spell at the London club.

The German attacker was a vital cog in ex-Blues boss Thomas Tuchel's side that won the UEFA Champions League title in the 2020/21 season.

Despite Werner's struggles to find the net on a consistent basis, the forward was a regular starter in Tuchel's first campaign as the London club's manager.

However, Lukaku was purchased from Inter Milan ahead of the 2021/22 season for a then-club-record fee, and immediately became the team's starting No. 9.

The Belgian striker caused a stir soon into his second homecoming at Stamford Bridge, though, when he admitted during an explosive interview that he would not say no to a return to the Serie A giants.

After that, it was said that Lukaku and Tuchel's relationship broke down, with the forward being benched for majority of the remainder of that season.

Despite Lukaku then sealing a loan move back to Inter ahead of this campaign, Werner was reportedly adamant that he wanted to leave Chelsea, going on to rejoin RB Leipzig in the Bundesliga.

The Germany star has now admitted what he feels his biggest issue at Chelsea was.

"The biggest problem was he [Tuchel] put a striker like Lukaku in front of me in the second season after I won the Champions League by nearly playing every game in the first squad," Werner told The Sun.

"That was the toughest moment for me, to get a player, a very good player, in front of me for €120 million (R2.6 billion).

"Romelu was a big striker and had to play after costing so much, and I didn't feel honoured enough.

"Maybe that was also a reason why I had ups and downs."

Werner also revealed his belief that Tuchel forgot the good impact he had upon arriving in London.

"I had a very good first six months at Chelsea, which was what the supporters and club expected of me," the striker said, per the Daily Express.

"I scored the goals and played good games.

"When you come from the kind of success I had in Germany or with Chelsea – playing nearly every game in the first season, winning the Champions League in 2021, scoring in the semi-final against Real Madrid, making a lot of goals.

"Then all this gets a little bit forgotten by the manager, it was not really fair.

"That was also a reason I had to move back to Leipzig, to get the enjoyment again."
