Salah stars to seal Merseyside Derby win for Liverpool

Mohamed Salah bagged a brace as Liverpool claimed the bragging rights in the Merseyside derby with a 2-0 win over Everton.

While Everton were unchanged from their last win, Reds manager Jurgen Klopp handed recalls to Ibrahima Konate, Kostas Tsimikas and Ryan Gravenberch and Diogo Jota.

After a cagey opening, the Reds went close to bagging the opening goal in the 25th minute when Salah won the ball back on the edge of the box before curling one over the crossbar.

The game seemingly turned in Liverpool's favour in the 37th minute when the away side had a player sent off after Ashley Young picked up his second yellow card of the half for a late challenge on Luis Diaz.

While the Reds dominated in the final ten minutes, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Dominik Szoboszlai did go close with efforts from distance that sailed just over the crossbar.

Both coaches looked to their bench on the hour mark, as Reds manager Jurgen Klopp withdrew Tsimikas and Gravenberch for Harvey Elliot and Darwin Nunez, while Everton threw on Beto for Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

Everton's resolve did break on 72 minutes when Liverpool were awarded a penalty after Michael Keane was deemed to have handled the ball in the box, which allowed Salah to convert for his sixth goal against the Toffees.

The Reds were denied a second goal on 89 minutes when Elliot cut in from the right and unleashed powerful strike that Jordan Pickford managed to tip onto the crossbar.

Salah made the game safe in second-half stoppage time by finishing off a well-worked counter-attack after being set up by Nunez.
