It remains to be seen whether Torres is in line to make a genuine return to football or if his post is teasing his participation in a charity event, but early speculation has mounted that he could join local side Fuenlabrada, who play in Spain's second division.
He then endured a brief spell with Serie A giants AC Milan before completing a sensational return to boyhood club Atletico in 2015, helping the club win the Europa League title two seasons later.
Torres also enjoyed incredible success on the international stage with Spain, having been part of the squad that won the 2008 and 2012 UEFA European Championships, scoring in the finals of both competitions, and the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
He ultimately scored 38 goals in 110 caps for La Furia Roja, which remains the third-most by any player to have represented the national team, behind only Raul Gonzalez and record-holder David Villa.
