The 34-year-old signed a three-year deal with the Cherries after completing his free transfer from relegated side Sunderland.
Defoe, who spent a successful loan spell at Bournemouth as a teenager in the 2000/01 season, is eager to take on the new challenge at what he describes as a 'special' club.
“If I’m scoring goals, it's good for the club, it's good for the team,” said Defoe, according to the Daily Echo.
“I’ll try and improve this team, help the young lads and just be a part of something special.
“I believe it’s a special place to be going forward. I’m just really excited.”
He added: “I understand I’m joining a top team that’s got some good players, good spirit, high intensity and lads that work hard for each other.”
