Emiliano Sala body identified after plane wreckage recovery from seabed of English Channel

Sala, 28, was travelling to Cardiff in a plane piloted by David Ibbotson, which went missing over the English Channel on 21 January.

The body was recovered late on Wednesday after the wreckage was found on Sunday morning and it has now been identified, according to police reports.

Officers said the families of 28-year-old Sala and missing pilot David Ibbotson, 59, have been informed of the development and will 'continue to be supported by specially-trained family liaison officers'.

"Our thoughts remain with them at this difficult time," Dorset Police said in an official statement.

"On Monday 21 January 2019 a plane carrying both men was flying from Nantes to Cardiff when it lost contact with Air Traffic Control, north of Guernsey.

"Sadly a search and rescue operation was unsuccessful in locating the plane and the two occupants," the statement continued.

"Subsequently AAIB [Air Accidents Investigation Branch] and privately funded search teams were deployed to the relevant area. Using specialist equipment the teams succeeded in locating and identifying the plane and recovering Mr Sala's body."
