Edinson Cavani explains story behind famous goal celebration

Manchester United striker Edinson Cavani has explained the story behind his unique goalscoring celebration.

Cavani boasts more than 400 career goals to his name across spells with the likes of Napoli, Paris Saint-Germain, United and the Uruguay national team, and is widely regarded as one of this generation's most prolific strikers.

Those who have followed the 33-year-old's career will have grown accustomed to not only his proficiency in front of goal, but also his famous celebration after scoring in which he motions as if firing from a bow and arrow.

"It's a bit of a long story and it's kind of wrapped up in our country's history, and the indigenous population, the Charruas," the Salto-born frontman told Manchester United's official website.

"When my little daughter, India, was born, her name is just a small reference to our native Uruguayans, the Charruas.

"So that arrow that I take out and then fire, is a goal celebration that sort of encapsulates all these things: a mix of my daughter's name and the indigenous peoples of my country. It has a special meaning..."

Cavani joined the Red Devils on a free transfer from PSG at the beginning of the season, and has scored five goals in 17 appearances, including the equaliser in United's 2-1 win over Fulham on Wednesday.
