2018 BBC African Footballer of the Year: Liverpool star Mohamed Salah secures second consecutive title

Salah now joins an illustrious list of names like Nigeria's Nwankwo Kanu, Okocha and Ivory Coast legend Yaya Touré, as the only players to win the title twice.

His 32 Premier League goals during the 2017/18 season proved to be a record-breaking feat in the English top-flight, while he also netted 10 in the UEFA Champions League en route to the final.

He ousted the four other nominees Medhi Benatia (Morocco), Kalidou Koulibaly (Senegal), Sadio Mane (Senegal) and Thomas Partey (Ghana) - to be regarded as the finest footballer from the African continent for a second consecutive year after a record-breaking 2018 campaign.

The Egypt superstar is also only the third player from the North African nation to win the title after Mohamed Aboutrika in 2008 and Mohamed Barakat, who won in 2005.

He scored both of Egypt's 2018 FIFA World Cup goals - 40% of their all-time total at the tournament.

Overall, the 26-year-old has scored a staggering 57 goals and registered 21 assists in 75 games for the Reds since his €42m transfer from AS Roma in July 2017.

Previous winners include the likes of Michael Essien, Didier Drogba, Riyad Mahrez, Andre Ayew, Chris Katongo, Emmanuel Adebayor and George Weah.
