DFB Pokal match report Bayer Leverkusen v Bayern Munich

Bayern Munich were crowned DFB Pokal champions for a 20th time after overcoming Bayer Leverkusen 4-2 in the final on Saturday evening.

Just two changes for Bayern from their final Bundesliga clash against Vfl Wolfsburg saw Joshua Kimmich replace Mickael Cuisance and Benjamin Pavard filling in for Alvaro Odriozola.

Bayern hit the ground running as early as the 16th minute with a thumping free-kick from David Alaba going over the wall and well beyond the reach of Lukas Hradecky.

Serge Gnabry gave the Bavarians a second goal eight minutes later after displaying composure from a one-on-one chance before drilling across their opposite number Hradecky.

Kai Havertz went inches close from bringing Bayer back in the match off an inviting opportunity following the half-hour mark, but was effectively thwarted by the Bavarians.

Leverkusen started the second half with two quick changes off the bench, as Kevin Volland and Kerem Demirbay replaced Nadiem Amiri and Julian Baumgartlinger respectively.

The Bavarians went further in front through Robert Lewandowski who connected with Manuel Neuer's long ball before powering past a scrambling Hradecky on 59 minutes.

Peter Bosz's side were given a lifeline four minutes later when a deep lying cross from Demirbay following a corner kick picked out Sven Bender who headed home from point-blank range.

Hansi Flick was forced to go without any natural centre-backs in the closing stages after Jerome Boateng limped off with an injury with his place taken by Lucas Hernandez.

The German champions put the icing on the cake as a ball from Ivan Perisic found Lewandowski who bagged his second with a first time chip in the final minute.

Leverkusen got a penalty in added time after Alphonso Davies was caught handling in the area by the Video Assistant Referee as Havertz fired home, but it was too little too late as Bayern clinched the cup.
