Marc Oliver Kempf broke the deadlock for Hertha just after the half-hour mark and Serhou Guirassy levelled matters for Stuttgart seven minutes before the break.
However, Florian Niederlechner restored the lead for Hertha on the stroke of half-time and that was enough to earn Hertha vital three points that moved them six points from safety with three games to go.
