RB Leipzig leapfrogged Bayern Munich into top spot in the Bundesliga standings after grinding out a 1-0 win over VfB Stuttgart in Saturday's action.

Emil Forsberg had a chance to put Leipzig ahead from the penalty spot in the first half, but missed leaving Dani Olmo to net the winner late in the second half as Bayern host Mainz on Sunday.

Bayer Leverkusen missed out on top spot on the league standings following a 2-1 loss at the hands of Eintracht Frankfurt.

Leverkusen made a promising start with a ninth minute lead through Nadiem Amiri, but it was cancelled by Amin Younes before an own-goal from Edmond Tapsoba gave the host victory.

Union Berlin's impressive start to the season continued with a 2-0 win over struggling Werder Bremen.

First half goals from Sheraldo Becker in the opening exchanges and Taiwo Awoniyi towards the end of the half were enough to lead Union to victory and fourth place on the standings.

Borussia Monchengladbach strengthened their grip on seventh place on the table courtesy of a 1-0 win over Arminia Bielefeld.

A second-half strike from Breel Embolo proved the difference between the two sides, as Gladbach start the New Year on a high after losing their last league match against TSG Hoffenheim.

FC Augsburg started the New Year with a 1-0 win over FC Koln in a bottom-half battle out at the RheinEnergieStadion.

Following a tentative first half, the winner arrived in the latter phases of the second half courtesy of Iago with the home side caught napping while languishing just seven points off the bottom.

TSG Hoffenheim made a disappointing start to the New Year after going down 3-1 to SC Freiburg at their own base.

Baptiste Santamaria found the opener early on before Vincenzo Grifo netted from the spot as an own goal from Kasim Nuhu put Freiburg three goals up at the break.

Hoffenheim's consolation arrived towards the closing period of the second half courtesy of Ihlas Bebou.

Bottom-placed Schalke winless run continued well into the New Year after succumbing to a 3-0 loss against Hertha Berlin.

On-loan Arsenal midfielder Matteo Guendouzi opened the deadlocked late in the first half with Jhon Cordoba netting the second in the second stanza before Krzysztof Piatek put the icing on the cake.
