Ex-Al Ahly star 'set to join' Euro club after failed Cairo stint

After lasting just 10 months at Al Ahly, French striker Anthony is reportedly on the brink of joining a new club in Europe following his failed stint in Egypt.

Modeste joined Al Ahly on the back of huge expectations in July 2023, as had he just seen out the remainder of his contract with Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund.

Arriving as a free agent, the 36-year-old signed a season-long deal with the Red Devils but the player's form in front of goal quickly became a concern given that he was brought in as an experience striker to bolster the frontline.

Many fans lost confidence in the centre-forward, claims Ahram Online, and some even took issue with the fact the manager Marcel Koller persisted with the player despite him not delivering with any bit of consistency.

Modeste scored just six goals in 31 matches at the club and the arrival of another striker in January 2024, Wissam Abou Ali, would ultimately see the Frenchman fall down the pecking order.

Following the announcement of his exit last week after his contract expired, it is now being reported that the veteran marksman is set to return to Europe.

According to Turkish newspaper Fanatic, Modeste is set to join local side Igdir FK on a one-season contract.

It is reported that the goal-poacher wanted to extend his stay at Ahly for a further two until the end of the Egyptian Premier League but that could not be agreed.

Igdir currently plays in the second tier of Turkish football and last season, they finished third on the table in their respective league stream.
