Cisse 'loses patience' over reported R1.5m unpaid salary

Renowned Senegalese coach Aliou Cisse has reportedly lost patience with Libya, who are said not to have paid him a single cent of his reported R1.5 million salary.

Cisse is one of the most esteemed coaches on the continent, thanks to his hugely successful nine-year spell with the Senegal national team.

He guided the Lions of Teranga to their maiden Africa Cup of Nations title in 2021, helped the team qualify for two FIFA World Cups, and oversaw a lengthy stay as CAF’s number one-ranked national team.

It was therefore no surprise when reports surfaced earlier this year that the Libya national team had agreed to spend big on his appointment.

At the time, Cisse was reported to have signed a contract guaranteeing him a lucrative salary of €76,000 (approximately R1.5 million) per month, making him the second-best-paid national team coach in Africa behind Algeria’s Vladimir Petkovic.

However, less than five months since his appointment, it has now emerged that the 49-year-old is unhappy over unpaid dues.

According to Afrik-Foot, Cisse has not been paid at all since becoming Libya head coach.

It is claimed he has lost patience with his employers and issued them with a deadline to pay what’s owed.

A deadline of Thursday, 17 July, has reportedly been set, with these reports said to have been confirmed by a source close to the Libyan technical team.
