Kaizer Chiefs' Giovanni Solinas defends Siyabonga Ngezana and Mario Booysen after Soweto Derby loss to Orlando Pirates in Telkom Knockout

The defensive duo had a day to forget as they couldn't cope with the pace of Thembinkosi Lorch, Justin Shonga and Vincent Pule, with the triumvirate helping Milutin Sredojevic's side reach the final of this competition for the first time since 2013 where they will face Baroka.

Chiefs were rattled early on, as a long ball from Pirates goalkeeper Jackson Mabokgwane was misjudged by Booysen, which set Pule clean through to side-foot a cross for Lorch, who blasted home at the near post 13 minutes in.

Ngezana, who had a torrid time in the league loss between these two sides in October, was also lucky to escape a red card midway into the second period when he elbowed Shonga in the ribs out of sight of referee Phillip Tinyani.

For Bucs' 84th minute winner, an unmarked Shonga initially failed to connect with a bicyle kick following a ball into the box from Zambian compatriot Augustine Mulenga, but he was still able to get up and score at the second attempt.

Amakhosi also have Daniel Cardoso and Erick Mathoho as options at the back, although the former came under fire earlier in the season for losing form after being arguably the club's best defender last term.

Mathoho was an important pillar for Chiefs in their 2014/15 title-winning season along with then-partner Tefu Mashamaite, but he has not been the same player in the past two campaigns and consequently lost his place in the national side.

When asked why Mathoho wasn't given a chance at Moses Mabhida Stadium, Solinas listed 21-year-old Ngezana's attributes and pointed out his side previously registered three clean sheets in a row.

"Why not play Mathoho? Because Ngezana is young and very good," Solinas said after the match in Durban.

"He's technically more of a centre-back, strong physical, fast, good header. So Ngezana is the future for South Africa football, also for Kaizer Chiefs.

"After a while we played Mario because Mario is a player who talks at the back, talks and has very good leadership, very organised, and this is why [I played them].

"But, in the three games [prior] we didn't concede a goal. Today we conceded two goals and that is a pity. But it's not all about the defenders, we need to be together. We lose together and it's not about the individual," insisted the Italian.
