Having come through the Derby as a player, Bartlett is now tasked with assisting Chiefs’ preparations for the mammoth fixture against arch rivals Orlando Pirates this Saturday.
Knowing all too well what it takes to overcome The Buccaneers, the former Bafana Bafana forward has insisted that come matchday, there will be little the coaches can do to influence the result.
“The coaches’ job will be done come Saturday and it will be up to the players to produce. The little impact we can have as coaches is making substitutions,” Bartlett said on Chiefs’ website.
“The work is pretty much done by Friday and then it’s up to the players to go out and display their talent and show why they’re part of Kaizer Chiefs.
“I just have to make sure as a coach that I instil that confidence in the players’ minds, because the Derby can be very stressful for players and they put unnecessary pressure on themselves.
“They’re scared to make mistakes, whereas in football you’re always going to make mistakes.”
Bartlett is also hoping to experience his first Derby as a coach on the winning side, as Amakhosi look to end an 11-game winless run dating back to December 2014.
“It’s going to by my first Soweto Derby as a coach. I hope to help make sure we can be on the winning side and get the three points,” he concluded.
