While many players and coaches will publicly say they prepare for it like any other game, there's always something different about Derby week.
Players change hairstyles, some arrive for training earlier than usual, bets are made and others try to avoid being tackled by the defenders in training.
There's always a funny or interesting story to tell about Derby week, so snl24.com/kickoff has tracked down a few former players from both Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs.
The first one to share a few interesting stories is former Amakhosi striker Lucky Maselesele.
"We had the late Shakes Khungwane in our team and obviously he was the funniest guy in the team. He was my brother and mentor since we both come from Alexandra. You know Shakes was sluggish and lazy, but he could play better than anyone. Most of the time Shakes would arrive late to training and he was lazy, but on Derby week he was the first to arrive at training because he wanted to play in the Derby.
"You'd find him wearing a black refuse bag running around the field at Naturena. It got everybody laughing, even Kaizer [Motaung] would say 'this guy thinks he is clever, he wants to play in the Derby'. If he was on the bench on Derby he would stand up and supporters would think that coach [Paul] Dolezar is saying that he should go warm up. So supporters would get excited and this would put the coach under pressure to put him in. Dolezar did not like it, because obviously he would have to put him in.
"My personal story is when one of the supporters here in Alex promised to give me his daughter. He said 'if you score against Pirates, I am definitely approving of the relationship'. He said I would not even have to propose."
