While many players and coaches will publicly say they prepare for it like any other game, there's always something different about Derby week.
Players change hairstyles, some arrive for training earlier than usual, bets are made and others try to avoid being tackled by the defenders in training.
There's always a funny or interesting story to tell about Derby week, so snl24.com/kickoff has tracked down a few former players from both Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs.
After ex-Amakhosi striker Lucky Maselesele shared a hilarious story about the late Shakes Khungwane, Pirates legend Lucky Lekgwathi gives us something to laugh about with stories of Benedict Vilakazi and Ntsikelelo Nyauza.
"We had 'Tso' Vilakazi in our team. You'd find that the week before the Derby we are playing in Venda or Giyani and Tso would not play those games because he is waiting for the Derby. But the following week you'd see him in the Derby. I remember we beat Santos in Cape Town and then on the week of the Derby the guys say 'no we continue with the same winning team'. But Tso would say 'come Saturday you'll be celebrating [a goal] with me in the corner'. And that happened, he scored and we celebrated with him. There are players that you just know are for the Derby.
"During that time we had the likes of Tso and [Joseph] Makhanya and we wanted to look neat, so we got haircuts and different hairstyles. Makhanya got a scotch haircut and 'Cheeseboy' [Lebohang Mokoena] got that Ronaldo cut where he would leave a little hair at the front. Gift [Leremi] would go plait his hair.
"I have another funny story on Nyauza. It was his first Derby. In the bus we were asking ourselves what is smelling and the guys are busy saying Fatau Dauda farted. The guys were scared of Fatau, so as captain they asked me to go speak to him. I go to him and say 'my friend you are killing us' but he says it's not him. Nyauza was sitting in front of him, so he calls me and says 'I am scared'. So I tell the guys that it's Nyauza. He was nervous ahead of the Derby. That's why I say the Derby is no ordinary game.
"Also when it's the Derby no one arrives late. Even when they are injured they want to start training. You can miss a final, but you can't miss a Derby because if you win you have bragging rights. If you win, you can find traffic cops saying just pass even though you were driving without your seatbelt on. Or you'd find someone at the garage offering to pay for the stuff you were buying."
