SA players abroad round-up: Maart & Okon in full swing

South African footballers continue to make waves across the globe, with several putting in standout performances over the past weekend for their respective clubs.

Among the most notable was former Kaizer Chiefs captain Yusuf Maart, who played the full 90 minutes as SV Ried claimed a 2-0 victory over FC Blau-Weiß Linz in league action on Saturday. His teammate, Antonio Van Wyk, also made a strong contribution, coming off the bench to register an assist.

Another SA star who grabbed headlines is Ime Okon. The former SuperSport United defender netted Hannover 96’s second goal in their 3-1 triumph over FC Magdeburg in the German Bundesliga 2, earning praise for his all-around display.

In the Major League Soccer, Bongokuhle Hlongwane featured prominently as Minnesota United outclassed Real Salt Lake 3-1 on Sunday. Also in MLS, former Stellenbosch FC player Olwethu Makhanya played a part in Philadelphia Union's dominant 4-0 win over Chicago FC.

Further south in America, ex-Sekhukhune United midfielder Jamie Webber clocked 20 minutes for FC Tulsa, who narrowly defeated Orange County SC 1-0.

Over in England, Bafana Bafana striker Lyle Foster was a key figure for Burnley FC, playing 86 minutes in their 2-0 victory over Sunderland in a Premier League encounter.

Still in England, Luke Le Roux got some minutes in Portsmouth’s draw with West Brom in the EFL Championship match.

In Norway, Samkelo Kabini, a former TS Galaxy prospect, lasted the whole 90 minutes for Molde FK as they secured a solid 2-0 win against Tromsø at Aker Stadium on Sunday night.

Elsewhere, ex-Chiefs defender Siyabonga Ngezana featured for FCSB, but only managed to play the first half in their 2-0 defeat to Argeș Pitești. Lastly, Gift Links continued his impressive run of form, providing the assist for AGF’s winning goal in their 1-0 victory over Vejle in Denmark.
