Campbell to revive Mofokeng rivalry at Bafana?

If there is a youngster on par or above Orlando Pirates winger Relebohile Mofokeng in the country, Shandre Campbell is the ideal comparison tool. Is the latter also on the path to breaking into the Bafana Bafana fold?

Mofokeng only started to play regularly in the PSL last season, after he was promoted from the DStv Diski Challenge two seasons ago.

Campbell walked a similar path at SuperSport United, as the Pirates teenager was one of his rivals in the DDC scoring charts, though the Club NXT attacker was more prolific in front of goal.

No doubt playing for a big club raises a player's profile significantly, but the left-footed prodigy had as much of a good campaign as Mofokeng - who has been called up to the national team - last term.

Although Matsatsantsa did not finish in CAF places nor did they win any trophy, the Johannesburg native's performances were enough to earn him a dream move to Club Brugge, who have introduced him to Belgian football via their reserve side, named Club NXT, which competes in the Challenger Pro League (second tier).

After not playing in the first two league matches, Campbell made a lasting first impression after netting a cracking half-volley on debut last weekend to help his side salvage a 2-2 draw against Patro Eisden.

On the back of a strong display for SuperSport in the Betway Premiership last campaign, should the teenager be considered for Bafana, if he maintains his performance for Club NXT?

"Listen, I think it's even too early to talk about that. His call-up, I think, will be at junior national level to start with. That's my opinion, and thereafter, depending on his performances, depending on his consistency..." noted Mike Makaab, CEO of ProSport International, speaking exclusively to KickOff.

"And we've seen coach Hugo Broos, he's not scared to call up young players, particularly young players who are doing well, so we just have to take it one step at a time, with no pressure being put on anybody.

"These things unfold naturally. I think the most successful careers are those that move in the right direction consistently. We can only hope Shandre improves, that his confidence, his level of football improves with time and hopefully the rest will fall into place," he continued.
