Could Pitso Mosimane emulate Florent Ibenge in dual club and national team role?

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane is a proven winner and has achieved nearly everything possible as a local club coach, but can he double up?

The thought of a club doubling up as a national team coach may not have crossed that many South African minds, but it could potentially be an option to explore for SAFA.

It is something Florent Ibenge had done for over four years – during which he led the DR Congo national team to three successive AFCONs while also being in charge of 14-time domestic league champions AS Vita – before stepping down from The Leopards last month.

On potentially losing Mosimane, Sundowns midfielder Tiyani Mabunda is confident his mentor will remain based on recent comments in the media.

"I personally can't really speak on his behalf. I've heard one of his talks that he said he's happy at Sundowns, and if a person is happy at a place then I don't see a reason why he would leave," Mabunda tells snl24.com/kickoff.

"He's a true leader; he's a special person; he's a special coach and he has the abilities to coach anywhere. But if his heart is at Sundowns, I think that's where he wants to be and we're grateful to have a coach like him."

Asked whether 'Jingles' would be able to emulate Ibenge in a dual role, 'Shuga' backed the 2016 CAF Coach of the Year to do so based on his track record.

"I can't say [if Pitso can emulate Ibenge]. It's difficult because I've never seen it happening myself but, if it were to happen, I wouldn't have a problem with it, as long as I still have my coach to coach me [at club level]," he adds.

"I know everything he does, he always does it to perfection and he makes sure that he gives his best, and the outcome is always positive when it comes to him.

"If that were to happen, I think he would manage. But it's a decision he would have to take, and we'll just have to wait and see [how things pan out].

"For us, as Mamelodi Sundowns, we are grateful to have him in our setup. We have an assignment [together], which is to win all the competitions that we participate in and we're going to give our best to make sure that we make the 'Sandawanas happy."
