Coach sings Richards Bay's praises after Downs loss

Richards Bay assistant coach Ronnie Gabriel felt the side were "outstanding" in the defeat to Mamelodi Sundowns on Tuesday afternoon.

Thapelo Morena scored the decisive goal for Sundowns after he latched onto a deflection in the box and fired a rocket into the top corner.

The Natal Rich Boyz had plenty of chances, with one big opportunity cleared off the line and hit the crossbar and others chances were saved by goalkeeper Ronwen Williams.

Gabriel says their performance was outstanding and the only thing that was missing was finding the back of the net.

"I think today was an outstanding performance by our group, we put on a good show today, we didn't disappoint in terms of the effort, in terms of commitment, creating goal-scoring chances, dominating play for the majority part of the game," Gabriel told SuperSport TV.

"I think we applied ourselves top notch today, it was top notch performance, the only thing that was missing was a goal.

"That has been the story of our season, week in and week out we've been creating numerous goal-scoring chances and it's just that extra quality in the final third that could have earned us extra points this season. But all in all a fantastic display by the group," he said.

"I was very happy with the performance, I'm sure the supporters will also be happy with this performance, although the result did not go our way but in terms of the play, fighting for the badge and fighting for the team it was top notch."

Gabriel also lamented the way they conceded and felt Sundowns did not open them up while they carved them open a number of times.

"If you back at the goal, the goal itself they didn't cut us open, it was a deflection of our player, it fell on the foot of the opposition and he tapped it away," he went on.

"So it was not a case whereby they cut us open or they played through us or in between us, it was just a matter of a deflection that fell on their path.

"But on the other end we cut them, opened them up, on three, four occasions, we had a one-on-one with the goalkeeper, the goal just refused to go in the back of the net but we have to accept it, move on, the next game is coming soon, we have to prepare and be ready for the next encounter," he added.

Richards Bay will next be in action on 3 May at home against Chippa United.
