Throwback Thursday: Brendan Augustine

"Let me not go there, it's ridiculous the salaries that these boys are getting now compared to the type of players that we were," Augustine tells snl24.com/kickoff.

"I would be earning a lot of money sir, trust me. I would be earning R500 000 a month. At the moment, there's a lot of players earning R350 000 to R400 000, but nobody is earning R500 000.

"But trust me, in my era, we would be over R500 000, if it was now. Think of the quality and what we accomplished for South Africa. Now at the moment we are dropping and the guys are earning incredible salaries but the national team is not performing.

"Why? Because players are happy with what they are getting [paid] at their clubs. It's not about pride anymore."

In South Africa, to be regarded as a star, you must have played for the likes of Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns, but despite being in demand, no amount of money could lure Augustine away from his beloved Umtata Bush Bucks.

"I never wanted to join a big team. You know, when you are a player, you get noticed and you go to a big club and there's so many other players there," he adds.

"You know they get a bit of bias because you played for a certain team. I wanted to play for a small team and achieve playing for Bafana Bafana. I wanted to prove my worth.

"I had to play against the bigger teams to show them what I could do, that's why I got into the national team. I didn't have to play for a big team to make the national team.

"I did get a phone call from one of the big clubs but I said no because I also wanted to be close to my family."

The East London-born former Bafana Bafana international retired in 2001, aged only 30, after having played for the likes of LASK in Austria and Ajax Cape Town.

"After Austria, I then went to Ajax Cape Town and that's when I ended my career. I picked up an injury there," he explains.

"I taught myself to play football the way I did. Growing up, I used to have a huge wall on my backyard and I would kick the ball against that wall with left foot, right foot, left foot, right foot; control, passing; and when I got onto the field, I had all the basics.

"I got to professional football when I was playing for PE Blackpool, and that's when Umtata Bush Bucks noticed me. At Bushbucks, my first salary was R5 000. At PE Blackpool I was earning R1500, and I was also working at the wine farms packing boxes in PE. I was playing professional, and also doing that to earn extra money."

In his career, Augustine managed to win the Coca Cola Cup with Bush Bucks, as well as the Rothmans Cup with Ajax Cape Town.

To provide for his family, these days Augustine works as the head of sports at North Riding Secondary School in Randburg.

"At the moment, because we don't have sports [due to Covid-19], I'm in charge of maintenance and head of security. I'm also the Covid officer.

"I basically look after the kids, make sure they are wearing the masks, exercise social distancing, etc. I'm married to my beautiful wife Anita, and we have two beautiful boys."
