Ndlovu, who is now working as a team manager at Mamelodi Sundowns, was the first African player to feature in the English Premier League in 1992/93. He played for Coventry City, before going onto play for Birmingham City, Huddersfield Town and Sheffield United.
Ndlovu captained the Zimbabwean national team. He is their most capped player with 100 appearances and is the Warriors’ all-time top scorer with 38 goals.
“My hero is Peter Ndlovu. He is a legend. He was the first black African to play in the English Premiership and he has done great things for the country. He made the country go to the Africa Cup of Nations and he has never disappointed. He played at the highest level and he is the all-time top scorer for the national team,” said Chawapiwa, who was part of Zimbabwe’s recent squad during the Four Nations tournament in Zambia.
“He is someone we grew up supporting in Zimbabwe. He is the greatest captain ever. I met him when we played against Sundowns. We shook hands and he said he is happy with the progress I am making. But I wish to get more advice from him as I progress in my career because I want to go overseas one day, even it means playing one season. I’d just like to get the experience there.”
