Simba Marumo in hot water with South African Football Players Union

Marumo, in his capacity as an analyst for SuperSport during the match between Mamelodi Sundowns and SuperSport United, commented that ‘teams need to establish review committees that will focus on disciplining as well as fining players who miss penalties’.

SAFPU released a statement on the matter, saying they condemn the comment “in the strongest terms”.

“SAFPU would like to distance itself from the utterances made this past Sunday by SAFPU president Simba Marumo,” it read.

“SAFPU does not only distance itself from this comment, but emphasises that such a comment does not have and should not find a place in our football. We felt it necessary that we should raise this to clarify this matter in the interest of the organization.

“It is also important to note that the president is an analyst in his personal capacity and is entitled to air his views.

“[But] it [also] is important to make the point that Simba Marumo is also the president of the union that represents the players, and as such he needs to conduct himself in a manner that does not prejudice the players he represents both in his personal and presidential capacities.”
