Mxoyana featured for the South Africa Under-20s earlier in his career and also represented the Under-23s at the CAF U23 African Nations Cup in 2011 where he played alongside the likes of Erick Mathoho and Thulani Hlatshwayo.
Now 27, the left-back still believes he can play alongside those players once again for the senior national team having already got a taste of youth international football.
“Playing for the Under-20 national team under the tutelage of our current Celtic coach [Serame Letsoaka] somehow opened doors for more national call-ups and I eventually featured for the senior national team [correction: actually the Under-23s] and that was an awesome feeling,” Mxoyana tells the Celtic website.
“Look, I am 27 years old now and I honestly feel that I haven’t reached my goals through my potential and God-given talent. I still want to don the national team jersey and most significantly win some gold medals as a player hence I cherish the opportunity given to me by Celtic to redeem myself.”
Mxoyana, who was once on the books of Orlando Pirates, signed for Celtic from Stellenbosch FC (formerly Vasco da Gama) during the off-season and believes Celtic can make an impression this season.
“I wish you can see the competition and zeal to win in the team,” he says. “Yes, we have lost our first official game of the season [against Maritzburg United] but I still think we had more chances to win than lose that game. The management together with technical team has assembled a very strong and competitive team and we will without a doubt compete…
“There is phenomenal team spirit in this team. Everyone wants to fight unreservedly to reward management for their faith in us. Again, crazy players like Lyle Lakay are keeping the mood high with their forever mindblowing jokes that keeps us laughing while bonding at the same time.”
