It's time to go down memory lane with the latest edition of My First Pay Cheque, where former Santos star Tyren Arendse reveals he was still taking a train to training when he signed his first professional contract.
The ever-smiling former footballs shares how he spent half of his salary on sneakers back in 1999.
Who you signed for?
"That was in 1999, I had just signed for Santos. Before that, I didn't even know what R100 looked like.

"I was a young boy who had just finished school."
How much was it?
"It was R750. So, for for me, it was a lot of money because my father was the only one working. I only used to get school clothes, and only on special occasions we used to get nice things.
"But other than that, there was no money for anything."
How did you celebrate?
"The first pay cheque I wanted to give to my mother just to say thank you because I was staying at home, but she said no, it was fine, I can enjoy the money... and I did enjoy some with my friends."
What did you buy with it?
"For myself, I bought a pair of tekkies. That was the first time I could afford to buy a tekkie.
"I can't remember the name of the brand, but I think I spent more than half of my first pay cheque on those tekkies."
Did it last you the whole month?
"No, never! But because during that time I was still staying with my mom, I didn't need money. I was getting food and everything.
"The only thing I needed to do was to keep some transport money because I was taking a train to training.
