Ramasike: Lucas Radebe gave me sleepless nights

In this week's edition of In The Spotlight, KickOff places Mamelodi Sundowns legend Eric Ramasike in the spotlight.

The retired former Cape Town Spurs and Moroka Swallows player also reveals which political party he is currently affiliated with.

Who is the best player ever in South Africa?

“Ace Mnini. The Moroka Swallows legend. It’s hard to single out just one player. Talents like Relebohile are trying their best, but they are still not even close to that grootman. Even in our generation, nobody came close to Joel 'Ace' Mnini.”

Was he the player you modeled your game after?

“Yes, because he was a winger just like me. He was skillful. Not that I played exactly like him, but I tried to copy some of the things he used to do on the pitch.”

Orlando Pirates or Mamelodi Sundowns?

“Mamelodi Sundowns any day. I grew up supporting Orlando Pirates, but that was mainly because I’m from Orlando. I was born next to Orlando Stadium, which is just five minutes away from my mother's house. My heart, however, is with Sundowns.”

ANC and Umkhonto we Sizwe Party?“[Laughs] I’m now supporting Gayton McKenzie’s Patriotic Alliance. You know I grew up supporting the ANC, but now I’m with Gayton McKenzie all the way.”

Which footballer used to give you sleepless nights?

“Lucas Radebe. He had height, strength, and he could kick.”

Your favorite Mamelodi Sundowns player?

“Jersey number 10. Lucas Ribeiro Costa.”

Is there anything you dislike about the modern game?

“The fact that we are not competitive enough in South Africa regarding player salaries. I don’t think it’s fair. These teams need to get quality players in order to compete with Sundowns. Even though I'm a Sundowns fan, I want the other teams to be competitive for me to fully enjoy football.

“Even if Sundowns win the league, I want it to be earned, not given to them on a silver platter. They should have to sweat for it.”
