Bafana's Dean Furman: No excuses in World Cup qualifers following failed AFCON campaign

Bafana will start their bid for a spot at Russia 2018 against Burkina Faso in Ouagadougou on Saturday night.

South Africa coach Shakes Mashaba and his men are under pressure after only winning once in their six AFCON 2017 qualifiers, but Furman has faith they can meet the nation's wishes.

"The media have said whatever they had to say and also fans have their opinion but for us as players we are fully focused," Furman tells snl24.com/kickoff.

"We are working as hard as possible to make sure that we get the result for our country. We want to make them proud of us and we are proud to wear the shirt.

"What was going on behind the scenes, we don't take much notice of it. And once we get into the camp we fully focus on the job at hand... and for us now it is to qualify for the World Cup."

The SuperSport United midfielder is drawing confidence from Bafana's 1-0 home win over continental giants Egypt in the annual Nelson Mandela Challenge last month.

"There's absolutely no excuses this time. Ultimately, not to qualify for the AFCON is not good enough and there's absolutely no excuses from my side and it is something we have to put it right," he adds.

"We're excited though about the World Cup qualifiers and we are coming back from a good victory over Egypt, one of the strongest forces on the continent. That will give us a lot of confidence.

"We have to make sure that we get a good start now in our group. Burkina Faso is going to be a difficult game, they have qualified for AFCON. They will be a tough side to us, as is any side going away in Africa. Maybe that's where against Mauritania in AFCON we found out how difficult it can be in Africa.

"But we have to be fully focused, be fully prepared for what they are going to throw at us. It is vitally important that we go for the good start."

Bafana have also been paired with Senegal and Cape Verde Islands in qualifying Group D.
