Ajax Cape Town still negotiating for Cape Town Stadium use

The Urban Warriors hosted the Cape Town Cup at the World Cup venue this past weekend, as international guests Crystal Palace and Sporting Lisbon joined Pretoria side SuperSport United in the pre-season spectacle.

In the past, Ajax have made use of both Athlone Stadium and Cape Town Stadium for their home fixtures, with seven home matches scheduled for Cape Town Stadium and eight for Athlone in the upcoming 2015/16 campaign, according to the PSL fixture list.

Ajax CEO Ari Efstathiou has revealed that negotiations are still underway with the City of Cape Town, with the club hoping to secure the World Cup stadium as their home venue, should it be economically viable.

“We are currently re-negotiating our position,” Efstathiou tells snl24.com/kickoff.

“Ideally Cape Town Stadium is better. It’s a better venue in that it suits our brand better, and it also opens up to a wider range of the public. It attracts families, it attracts more females and has a better transport hub than Athlone – Cape Town Satdum offers a lot more.

“It’s a little bit further away, but it’s a better venue, there’s no doubt it,” he continues. “It’s iconic and represents Cape Town, and being the only club in Cape Town, we should be playing from that stadium. Ideally we would like to make an arrangement with the City [of Cape Town] to play there, as long as it is cost-effective.”

Efstathiou could not confirm a date on when the matter will be resolved, yet was confident that a final decision will be made soon.
