ABC Motsepe League playoffs moved back

The tournament will decide which two teams from South Africa’s third tier will participate in the National First Division in the 2014/15 season.

The nine provincial winners from around the country will gather for the finals, where they will have the chance to go from amateur to semi-professional at least.

Just two sides have been confirmed as yet, with other provinces either still playing the final few matches of their league campaigns or grappling with challenges to the league winners from disgruntled opponents.

One of the confirmed sides is Highlands Park, who will represent Gauteng having previously given rise to no less than three top-flight teams.

They are a club with a rich history who have been through various incarnations in the past and would eventually first give rise to Jomo Cosmos when they sold their franchise to Jomo Sono in 1983.

By then the club had appeared in the final of all three current domestic cup competitions, but came away with no trophies to show for their efforts.

Highlands Park were reborn in 1990 and reached the top-flight again only to be sold at the end of 1992 to the owners of Welkom Eagles, whose one and only season in the top-flight would end in disaster with just a single victory from their 38 games.

Once again they rose from the ashes and owner Larry Brookstone then joined forces with lower league side Silver Stars to form a new team, HP Silver Stars, which has progressed into the Platinum Stars we know today, now owned by the Royal Bafokeng Nation.

The other club confirmed for the ABC Motsepe League playoffs this year are Cape Town All Stars, who found fame in 2012 when they played Kaizer Chiefs in the first round of the Nedbank Cup and lost 3-0 at Soccer City.

Mamelodi Sundowns owner Patrice Motsepe announced a sponsorship deal of the third tier of South African football in March. The playoffs will see the nine competing teams split into two pools, one with five sides and the other with four.

They play each other in a round-robin format with the top two sides in each final not only advancing to the final, but qualifying for the NFD next season.
