Story Behind My Nickname: Tlou "Gautrain" Segolela

In this edition of "Story Behind My Nickname," KickOff catches up with Orlando Pirates legend Tlou Segolela to discuss the origin of his nickname, Gautrain.

The Limpopo-born star secured two Premier Soccer League titles and two MTN8 trophies with the mighty Buccaneers.

Q: Who and where did you play?

A: "Tlou Segolela is from Moletjie in Polokwane, Limpopo. I also played for clubs such as Bloemfontein Celtic, Platinum Stars, and Polokwane City."

Q: What's your nickname?

A: "Gautrain."

Q: Who gave it to you and why?

A: "The legendary Mzayoni, a late Orlando Pirates die-hard supporter. Before that, everyone had their funny nicknames for me; some called me Moletjie Express and Rea Vaya. However, it was the Gautrain that gained prominence nationwide.

"In 2010, Mzayoni named me after the 80 km high-speed express commuter, Gautrain. During that time, it was the fastest transporter to reach your destination, aligning well with the speed I employed to enter the opposition's box in just 7 seconds. During my school days, I was part of the Athletics team and learned to run with or without the ball, honing my skills in the dribble through the cones drill."

Q: Did you like it?

A: "It's exciting to receive a unique nickname, one that nobody else had. Although I wasn't too keen on nicknames initially, I understood that it sets you apart from other players. Once Pirates fans give you a nickname, they never forget you."

Q: Anyone that didn't use it?

A: "My former teammates still call me Bra Sox. I had very skinny legs growing up, so the club's socks didn't fit me well; they were bigger than my skinny legs. During matches, I would spend time fixing them, and my teammates would get irritated finding me tying my socks when they wanted to pass me the ball (laughs).

"In the development league, I was known as Bra Sox because of my meticulous organization and desire for everything to be in order. Gautrain came from the fans."

Q: If you could relive it, what would you want your nickname to be?

A: "I love the Gautrain one. Even today, I don't share it with anyone. I appreciate what Mzayoni did for me. I wish those in charge of the Gautrain could use me as their model in the billboards."
