In this edition of Story Behind My Nickname, KickOff catches up with former Orlando Pirates left-back Innocent Chikoya on the origing behind his nickname Roba Letheka.
Although he is still not sure of the origin of the name, Chikoya says you shouldn't regard yourself as a former Pirates player if you leave without getting a nickname from the club's faithful.
Who and where did you play?
"Innocent Chikoya is a former Zimbabwe international who played as a left-back for Orlando Pirates, Manning Rangers, Moroka Swallows and African Wanderers."
What's your nickname?
"I had plenty. Jerry Sikhosana used to call me Matsogo (hands), that's because I used to pass the ball as if I was doing it with my hands. But the popular one is Roba Lethekga".
Who gave it to you and why?
"I didn't even ask what it meant to be honest. I don't even know how it came about, I just heard the Pirates fans screaming, Roba Letheka!"
Did you like it?
"You know the story of nicknames, you just live with it."
Anyone that didn't use it?
"My teammates used to call me Chiks, shortened from my surname Chikoya. But the fans and the media called me Roba Letheka."
If you could relive it, what would you want your nickname to be?
"Chiks. It just shortens everything. My former teammates Eddie Dinha, and Joseph Ngake even today still call me Chiks.
"If you leave without a nickname, then it would be hard to associate yourself with a club like Orlando Pirates.
"If the Pirates supporters don't give you a name, it means there is something wrong.
"The supporters will always give you a name if you are doing something right on the pitch.
"If they don't give you a name then you should start to ask yourself questions, why me? Which Pirates am I playing for?
"Pirates supporters they should recognise you."
