Pirates' start under Ouaddou v Riveiro

With the league on pause, KickOff analyses head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou's start at Orlando Pirates compared to three seasons at the same stage under his predecessor Jose Riveiro.

Ouaddou was under pressure early on in the season, following back-to-back league defeats to Sekhukhune United and Marumo Gallants.

However, Pirates dumping Mamelodi Sundowns out of the MTN8 and reaching the final has given them a shot in the arm in reviving their campaign, eventually going into the international break lying fifth on the table with nine points after five matches.

The standard was set high by Riveiro, who, at this stage last season, was riding on a perfect start of five victories from five (perfect 15 points), though he had two seasons to build that kind of momentum to keep up with The Brazilians.

However, in his first season at Bucs, the Spaniard collected only eight points after five games with one defeat, two draws and two win. That season, the side finished second.

He also struggled early in his second season, as after five fixtures, the Soweto giants only had seven points after two wins, two losses and a draw. They also ended as runners-up again.

Meaning, Ouaddou has enjoyed a slightly better start than the man he succeeded did in his first two seasons after five matches.

With the emotions getting settled in the league, especially after a 3-0 win over Chippa United, the Moroccan-Frenchman's biggest test will also come when the side kickstarts CAF Champions League duty after the FIFA break, where they will play two preliminary rounds before the group stage.

Pirates, however, will resume with the MTN8 final against Stellenbosch FC at Mbombela Stadium on 13 September.
