Step-up proof for Pirates’ keeper

When Sipho Chaine ran across the pitch to his opposite number Bruce Bvuma at the end of the Soweto Derby, there had been a personal accomplishment for the Orlando Pirates first choice keeper.

Chaine went up to give Bvuma the thumbs up for his performance on the day for Kaizer Chiefs after a late penalty made the difference.

Of significance for Chaine, was that this was his first clean sheet in this fixture.

Prior to Saturday he had conceded in the other three matches that he had played for Pirates against Chiefs.

The latest clean sheet was number 14 for this season for the 28-year-old keeper who is enjoying his time under Jose Riveiro.

Chaine kept six clean sheets (conceded 16) from his 21 appearances in his first season.

Then last term, he moved to 12 clean sheets (21 goals conceded) after pushing his game count to 29.

This season, the former Bloemfontein Celtic keeper has played, conceded 15 through keeping 15 clean sheets.

In Chaine, Ronwen Williams now has a steady second choice in the Bafana Bafana squad.

Chaine's rise has come after starting at the back of the queue upon arriving from Chippa United in September 2022.

Though he is locked into a contract for another two seasons, Pirates will have taken note of Chaine's input with hope that the terms of his contract will be improved.
