In the latest edition of Negotiating Behind Scenes, former Orlando Pirates defender Bongani Cashibe tells a story of how the Soweto Giants rolled the red carpet when they signed him.
Cashibe reveals how he felt after making a U-turn on AmaZulu FC who had already started paying his salary and instead signed for Pirates.
Who I signed for?
"I signed for Pirates in 2006, I was from AmaZulu. I already had a contract with AmaZulu. But Maritzburg United was refusing to give me my clearance.
"AmaZulu took me from Maritzburg United. I was still in the process of getting my clearance from Maritzburg through the PSL DRC.
"Immediately I got my clearance Pirates came knocking."
How did you find out?
"Through my Agent. I was already earning a salary at AmaZulu but could not play official matches.
"I had to change my mind and go to Pirates, though my heart was with AmaZulu. My grandfather was the biggest fan of AmaZulu. But the Pirates' offer influenced my decision. It was too good."
Where did you meet?
"Pirates paid for the flights, we had a discussion in a hotel in Johannesburg in Sandton at 10 pm. They agreed to compensate AmaZulu for everything they have spent on me."
Who was there?
"Me, Screamer Tshabalala and my Agent. After a few minutes, Irvin Khoza arrived. I was shocked. All hotel doors were closed, and a red carpet was rolled out for him. I was so excited; I wasn't familiar with such things. Before that, I had only seen the red carpet on television during special occasions."
What surprised you?
"It was the red carpet. But they did explain that my meeting with Dr Khoza also fitted a special occasion."
Did you get what you wanted?
"I can say I did get what was in the contract. But I only signed the following day because I was not happy with some of the things in my contract."
Did you see out the contract?
"I had signed for three years plus a two-year option. So, in total, it was five years. And yes, I did see it out."
What you would change?
"I was welcomed with warm hands at Pirates. I was pleased to meet the chairman and Screamer was also supportive."
