Mhlongo: Maswanganyi is a show stopper

Former Orlando Pirates captain Benson Mhlongo believes Patrick Maswanganyi deserves significant praise for the way he executed his penalty against Kaizer Chiefs.

The Buccaneers claimed the bragging rights after defeating the Amakhosi 1-0 at a sold out FNB Stadium on Saturday.

Maswanganyi scored a last-minute goal from the penalty spot, but did so with the famous Panenka down the middle.

"The derby was interesting, especially considering that Chiefs are struggling, but they managed to hold off Pirates for so long," Mhlongo told KickOff.

"They aimed to play in transition, but Pirates was dominant in first half. While we can say Pirates deserved to win, credit must be given to the opposition for their great fight.

"Pirates controlled the first half, but Chiefs showed resilience in the second half. When it came to the penalty, Mofokeng was fouled, and the referee gave an advantage, which makes the situation a bit tricky.

"Tito Maswanganyi is a showstopper, and that boy is incredibly brave, especially considering the pressure he has faced regarding the number 10 jersey since last year. To take the penalty the way he did was bold; if he had missed it, he would have faced significant backlash. I admire his character.

"His execution demonstrates that he is one of the most skilled players in the country. As a nation, we should allow him to be himself, or we risk losing a gem.

"If he had missed that penalty, I can't even imagine the consequences. Maswanganyi has the potential to be another Jabu Pule. We need to give him the space to showcase his talent."
