History proves Kaizer Chiefs are cup kings

This season marks the 44th year since the establishment of the National Premier Soccer League (NPSL) and the 30th since the founding of the National Soccer League (NSL) in South Africa, and a fitting time to remind the younger generation of supporters of the pedigree our current PSL clubs have behind them.

Chiefs have won 52 major trophies in their illustrious history, Soweto rivals Orlando Pirates are second with 27 major honours to their name and Mamelodi Sundowns are third with 17 pieces of major silverware in the past 44 years.

Chiefs are the overall League title leaders with 11 championships won since 1971, the first year we had a national professional soccer league. Sundowns remain the club with the most number of League titles won (9) since the establishment of the NSL in 1985, with Pitso Mosimane's side adding one more to their tally last season.

Pirates remain the only South African club to have lifted the African Champions Cup (now CAF Champions League) in 1995 and African Super Cup (one-off match) in 1996, with Chiefs winning the African Cup Winners' Cup (now CAF Confederation Cup) in 2001.

The Buccaneers are also the only team to have won back-to-back trebles in 2010/11 and 2011/12, while Sundowns (1997/98, 1998/99, 1999/00) and SuperSport United (2007/08, 2008/09, 2009/10) are the only two sides that have won three consecutive League titles.
