Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Manqoba Mngqithi out to finally vanquish MTN8 curse

Head coach Manqoba Mngqithi says Mamelodi Sundowns are aiming to finally end their MTN8 jinx this season.

Despite their dominance in the domestic football scene over recent years, the MTN 8 remains elusive for the Brazilians who have never lifted the trophy in their history.

Masandawana last won the top-eight competition in October 2007, then known as the SAA Super Eight.

Mngqithi's side begins their chase of the elusive MTN 8 trophy with a highly-anticipated encounter against Kaizer Chiefs at the Lucas Moripe Stadium on Sunday.

"It's a very tricky encounter, especially at the final stages of our pre-season training where you're not sure how far and how long the players can go for," Mngqithi said.

"But we believe the team has prepared very well. They've been looking good in all the friendlies we've played.

"We have devised some more build-up schemes, work a little bit on our counter-pressing and our high press.

"I am confident that Sundowns, in probably the seven years I have been here, we have struggled in winning this cup. We will be going all out to finally become winners of the cup, but that starts with the first step against Chiefs," Mngqithi added.

Kick-off is at 15:00.
