Kaizer Motaung leaps to defence of coach Giovanni Solinas

Chiefs have yet to win an Absa Premiership match in five attempts thus far, registering one of their worst ever starts in the PSL era.

They were also eliminated from the MTN8 semi-final by defending champions SuperSport United, despite carrying an away-goal advantage into the second leg at home last weekend.

However, Motaung remains calm amid Amakhosi’s current situation and stresses that the Italian tactician will require an extended period to get his team ticking, after he missed the majority of their pre-season.

“It’s not a continuation [from last season’s poor run]. You have to bear in mind that the coach came in and didn’t have a pre-season with the team,” defended Motaung.

“So, he just came in and unfortunately the problem we had in August was [that fixtures were] very tight, as you can see we’re trying to use the dates as early as we can because there’s going to be a congestion as we go forward, especially due to the CAF competitions.

“But I’m not very much concerned at the moment. I mean, the coach needs to be given a chance. He did not start the season like all other coaches that had a pre-season and was able to put their systems in place.”

Meanwhile, ‘Chincha Guluva’ has admitted concern over their defensive frailties, with Chiefs having conceded 10 goals in their eight matches in all competitions this season, but says he prefers such blunders happening sooner rather than later.

“So far I’m still happy with what is happening, except that obviously we’ve had some glitches in our defensive areas.

“You must also understand we’re having new players coming into the team, which for me augurs very well for us going forward.

“So, it’s better to experience these kinds of hiccups in the beginning than to have them later during the season.”
