Benni McCarthy notes Cape Town City's struggles

The Citizens have started the 2017/18 campaign in impressive fashion, conceding just one goal and scoring six to maintain their perfect record so far this season.

With all clubs on recess over the next two weeks owing to the Fifa international break, City’s momentum has been somewhat curtailed, but McCarthy insists he’ll make it work in his side’s favour.

“I see it as a good thing because it gives me more time to work specifically on certain areas,” the City coach said. “I now know the team can fight and play ugly, but get the results, so now I want to try and work more on our offensive principles, what we are not doing as well as our defensive qualities.”

City’s goals have been spread across four different scorers, namely Ayanda Patosi, Teko Modise, Letsie Koapeng and Lehlohonolo Majoro, yet McCarthy says he wants to see an improved showing from his frontline.

“People can see we can defend and keep teams at bay and put our bodies on the line, but in attack I feel we are still lacking that killer pass, and that final ball to let the strikers in and enabling them to be more ruthless in front of goal,” he said. “In some games you won’t get any opportunities, so when you do get one, we need to be more clinical in taking them.

“So this week will allow us to work a little bit more on that, and our finishing as well. We have to practise and get better every day.”

Following the international break, City return to action against Bidvest Wits in their second-leg MTN8 semi-final, scheduled for Sunday, 10 September.
