Sundowns reveals Divine Lunga plans

The latest transfer window has kept Mamelodi Sundowns plotting their way around the return of Divine Xolile Lunga to Chloorkop after spending a season on loan at Golden Arrows.

Lunga had top marks away at Arrows where he featured in 30 games playing either left-back or left midfield.

The utility player's loan move to Arrows was prompted by his desire to earn minutes after featuring in only 12 games in his first season at Sundowns in the 2021/22 season.

Upon his return, Lunga has been given all 'positives' from the technical team through pre-season giving the biggest hint that he is part of the plans for the new season.

With matters relating to the foreign quota pressing at Chloorkop the registration of Lunga is what will be tackled by the club.

The plan on hand with the 28-year-old is to register him as a non-foreigner having now become eligible for permanent residence having arrived in South Africa in 2018 from Chicken Inn.

That process is already underway.

Sundowns have another six foreign players in their books in Brazilian winger Lucas Ribeiro Costa, Argentine midfielder Junior Mendieta, Marcelo Allende (Chilean), Erwin Saavedra (Bolivian), Abdelmounaim Boutouil (Morocco), and Abubeker Ahmed Nasir (Ethiopia).

One of those six players will have to be sacrificed as only five can be registered as foreign players.

Uruguayan midfielder Gaston Sirino, Kenyan defender Brian Mandela Onyango, Ugandan goalkeeper Denis Onyango, and Namibian forward Peter Taanyanda Shalulile are all now registered as non-foreign players.

With Lunga, he gives Sundowns options at left-back, left central defence, and can also play further up the field.

The Brazilians will also have Aubrey Modiba, Terrence Mashego, and Sifiso Ngobeni at left-back while there is also Lyle Lakay who was was out on loan at Cape Town City last season.
