Shalulile’s golden dozen chase

Mamelodi Sundowns gunslinger Peter Shalulile might have gone through a lean scoring spell this year, but he is still punching way above what has been regarded as best in the PSL.

Shalulile hasn't had the best runs in the calendar year with only one goal in six appearances.

The 30-year-old also hasn't scored for Namibia this year in five games having shot blanks at the AFCON finals.

However, Shalulile still has plenty reasons backing his drive to keep scoring at Sundowns.

Next target is at least 20 goals for four seasons in a row which will surpass what Daniel Mudau delivered in his prime as a free scoring striker at Sundowns where he spent just about all his career.

Mudau reached the magical 20 figure for three consecutive campaigns (1998/99 – 26 goals, 1999/00 – 21, 2000/01 – 23) but Shalulile can better that as Sundowns could potentially play another 21 games in all competitions.

For all his recent mini-drought, Shalulile already has 10 goals to his name this season and has the golden 20 in sight.

He scored 23 last term, had 30 in the 2021/22 campaign and fired home 22 through the 2020/21 season.

The big one on offer is Siyabonga Nomvete's all-time PSL record of 123 goals.

Shalulile is on 112 goals scored while playing for a club playing top league football.

His goals at Highlands Park while there were in the first division are not factored in.

To get to the target of 124 goals, Shalulile needs 12 goals from a minimum of 15 games which could grow to 21 if Sundowns reach the finals of both the Nedbank Cup and CAF Champions League.

CAPE TOWN, SOUTH AFRICA - DECEMBER 24: Peter Shalu

Shalulile is already sitting on the fastest scoring rate of all players to surpass the 100-goal mark.

None of Mudau (110 goals in the PSL era years), Mabhuti Khenyeza (110 goals), Bradley Grobler (110 goals), Manuel 'Tico-Tico' Bucuane (104), and Collins Mbesuma (103 goals) did so quicker than Shalulile.

Shaluile has reached his 112 goals in just 223 appearances which means he scores a goal with every second appearance.

This rate would have been better had it not been for the struggles that he had to deal with in his first season playing in the DStv Premiership while at Highlands Park when he scored once in 15 matches.

Even his second season in the top league after returning from the first division wasn't the best – based on the standards that he has set – as he scored seven in 27 games playing in a team that was merely satisfied with staying alive in the league.

Ultimately his scoring rate at Highlands was a goal every three games.

Shalulile's goals have come within the shortest period ever with his first having come as recent as February 2017.
