Mngqithi insists 'points are not guaranteed'

Manqoba Mngqithi has cited the ever-increasing intensity of the DStv Premiership as a warning that his Mamelodi Sundowns side are not guaranteed a league title this season.

Sundowns have won the last five league titles and are already at the top which has prompted predictions of a sixth consecutive championship despite having already lost twice in nine games.

"Every season is always challenging for us," notes Mngqithi.

"We never take any game for granted.

"We never take any season for granted.

"It is only after a fact that everybody has an opinion and that is why say hindsight is the best sight because now it is very difficult to know whether Sundowns will win the league or not.

"And whether (Orlando) Pirates will win the league or not or (Kaizer) Chiefs or SuperSport (United).

"But immediately when this thing starts to show up at the end and there is a gap and a difference in points it then looks like it is easy.

"But the truth of the matter is that when you are looking at what is happening in the league at the moment you will agree with me that no points are guaranteed for anyone against any team.

"Who expected Richards Bay to be where they are now?

"Who expected AmaZulu to be where they are?

"Who expected Maritzburg (United) to be where they are?" says Mngqithi.

"In the PSL it is a dog-eat-dog but, in the end, it looks like it was easy when somebody has won the championship, yet the truth of the matter is that it is not as easy.

"The only thing we should improve in our game is not having teams sitting in which is why 50-60% of the teams in the league now want to win against Sundowns.

"That also for me is what is going to bring the best out of not only Sundowns but the league because the competition is intense and that is what we need.

"I think now we are getting the right intensity that we need for football matches," he adds.
