Mngqithi explains Sundowns' plan to fill up stadiums

Mamelodi Sundowns co-head coach Manqoba Mngqithi has explained the club's plan to fill up stadiums for home games this season.

Sundowns will take on La Passe in the second leg of the CAF Champions League second preliminary round on Friday.

As has become customary for the Brazilians, a wide range of pre-game entertainment has been planned.

This has been the theme for Sundowns this season as the side makes a big push to bring more supporters to the stadiums. This has been done through the integration of entertainment elements such as music artists, kiddies' corners and player interaction with supporters.

"Sometimes in South Africa, we don't learn from our own history, because our history suggests that our people are prone to come to the stadium if there is also some sort of artists or music, they like that," explained Mngqithi.

"That is why if you check the numbers that artists usually collect in their small concerts or festivals, [it's] usually more than what we collect as teams into the stadiums.

"I think Sundowns is also trying to bring that back – to always have an artist at almost every match that we play at home so that those who may not be very keen on football, they must have something else to appreciate for coming into the stadium."

Mngqithi words echoed the sentiments made by the club's chairman Tlhopie Motsepe before the start of the season.

"The day Mamelodi Sundowns supporters are known for filling our stadiums will be the day will be the day that we truly become the biggest team on the continent," the 33-year-old wrote in the Mamelodi Sundowns Magazine.

Sundowns go into the clash against La Passe FC with a 7-0 aggregate score from the first leg.

Kick-off is at 17:30.
