Allende’s international door remains shut

Mamelodi Sundowns star midfielder Marcelo Allende has been ignored yet from the Chilean national team for the upcoming 2026 World Cup qualifiers (CONMEBOL).

Allende has been value for money since completing a reported USD 3 million (approx. R56 million) move from Uruguayan club Montevideo City Torque in July 2022.

The 24-year-old needed no time to settle last season and eventually closed off the campaign as a league champion.

Into the new season, Allende has continued as a regular starting all six games for The Brazilians with his influence visible.

However, for all he has done at Sundowns, Allende is getting no luck of returning to the national team.

Chile coach Eduardo Berizzo – who hails from neighbouring Argentina – has ignored the little midfield maestro in the squad for games against Uruguay and Colombia.

La Roja travel to Uruguay on September 9 and then host Colombia four days later.

Berizzo has called up a squad largely dominated by players plying their trade in Latin America.

There are as many as 35 players playing either in Chile, Brazil, or Argentina with almost half of them yet to earn their first senior national team caps.

Veterans Arturo Vidal, Gary Medel, and Alexis Sanchez have all been included.

Allende – who has one senior cap – was last called up while still playing for Montevideo City Torque in Uruguay and sat on the bench against Bolivia in February 2022.

The attacking midfielder earned caps at Under-17 and was captain of the Under-20 national team.
