A Manchester United legend's shirt will be on sale in an auction and bidding will start around £8,000 - 12,000 (R185 000 - 278 000)!

The shirt belongs to George Best and is a match-worn number seven jersey that he wore while representing Northern Ireland in 1964.

The auction is set to take place on 28 September at Graham Budd Auctions in the United Kingdom.

The shirt is just one piece of a collection assembled over the last 25 years by life-long Man United fan, Paul Atkinson.

The collection also includes over 300 lots of medals, caps, rare programmes, and other associated memorabilia from the past 100 years of the club's history.

It also consists of jerseys worn by fellow United legends including the likes of Bobby Charlton, Eric Cantona, David Beckham, and Cristiano Ronaldo among others.

"I've been a passionate supporter of Manchester United since childhood and went to University in Manchester in the 1970s so I could regularly go to matches," Atkinson said as per Irish News.

"It reached a pinnacle sitting behind the goal at the Nou Camp in 1999 when Solskjaer scored: nothing could ever match those three minutes.

"The following year I went to an auction at Old Trafford out of curiosity but I got the bug and within about five years, I had an almost complete post-war collection of competitive match programmes. I spent the next decade or so picking up United medals."
