In the latest edition of My Locker Room Secrets, former Kaizer Chiefs striker Siyabonga Nomvete reveals the worst dressers in the Amakhosi changeroom during his time at the club.
Who was always late?
"A lot happened when I was still there, but Isaac Shakes Kungwane was the one who was always late (laughs).
"That guy was always late; he'd sometimes leave his place without a phone charger and soccer boots."
Any interesting rituals before you played?
"To be honest, I never noticed anyone doing something of that sort, I was too focused on playing.
"My roommate in camp was Jabu Mahlangu, sometimes it would be Aubrey Mothibe."
Who was the jokester?
"Shakes Kungwane, Brian Baloyi, and Jabu Mahlangu, those are the guys who were doing the jokes.
"Also, Martin Zwane with his unique jokes. Sometimes his jokes would just pop up during a tough match.
"The opposition winger would finish Martin and go past him like he was not there, and Martin would scream loud warning Lifa Gqosha about the incoming danger, Lifa! Be careful mate! He has already finished me! cover me! (laughs)."
Was it a muti change room?
"Remember some of those things are never performed in front of the players (laughs)."
Who was the singer?
"Daniel Matsau, Patrick Mbuthu and Cyril Nzama were our leaders in that department."
Who was the best dressed?
"We had many best dressers there at Chiefs (laughs), the likes of Doctor Khumalo and Thabo Mooki were always on point.
"Even their cars were clean, they wouldn't dare give you a lift if you didn't take a shower after training.
"As for the worst dressers, I can say it was all the foreign players we had at Chiefs at the time. Especially Emeka Mamale and Halidou Malam (laughs). Those guys would wrap themselves in their countries' traditional wear, slip into sandals and hit the road. You wouldn't stop laughing in Naturena those days."
Rate the coach's team talk
"At Chiefs, I was coached by both Paul Dolezar and Muhsin Ertugral, and their team talks were good, even though Dolezar would sometimes be funny.
"He used to fight a lot with Shakes Kungwane. On Mondays just before our training sessions, Shakes always told us about his weekend, and Dolezar would overhear everything Shakes said and appear behind him and say, Yah! You've been drinking again? It's fine today we are going to run the whole session for this alcohol to come out. You dare throw up I will fine you R500! (laughs), and Shakes would be so furious and say, Eish guys, I'm tired of this old bald man you know??."
